ATV Trails in Duck Creek Village: Riding the Markagunt Plateau

Trip Planning story from Duck Creek Village Inn

Duck Creek sits at the center of the Markagunt OHV trail system with 300-plus miles of forest roads, meadow loops, and volcanic terrain. Here is how to plan your ride.

Duck Creek Village sits at the center of one of the best OHV trail systems in southern Utah. The Markagunt Plateau gives you 300 to 500 miles of interconnected routes through Dixie National Forest, and the trailheads start right from camp. Ride a mellow loop with kids before lunch, or spend a full day chasing rim views toward Zion and the Grand Staircase.

Our ATV section covers trails, maps, rentals, rules, and snowmobile info in detail. This post focuses on the planning side so you can match the right ride to your trip.

What makes the Markagunt system work

Most riding here happens on old forest service roads with a hardpack surface and some loose rock. Elevation changes stay light to moderate, so the system favors relaxed, scenic riding over technical single-track. Terrain moves between mixed conifer forest, open meadows, volcanic peaks, and old lava fields.

Seven named loops cover the system, fed by around 50 named routes. Duck Creek Campground and Yankee Meadow Campground both offer direct trail access. From Duck Creek Campground, loops C, D, and E are reachable without loading a trailer.

Four trails worth planning around

Navajo Lake Loop covers about 10 miles of easy terrain with lakeside views. First-time riders, families, and mixed groups do well here because the scenery carries the ride. Late spring through fall.

Strawberry Point Trail runs 14 miles at an intermediate level through forest and meadow, with views toward Grand Staircase-Escalante. Summer and early fall.

Henries Knoll Loop stretches to 18 miles, still intermediate, with Cedar Breaks views opening along the way. Most riders treat this as a solid half-day outing. Summer and early fall.

Cascade Falls Trail mixes 12 miles of forest road and open sections with sightlines into Zion National Park. Intermediate difficulty. Late spring through fall.

Where to rent

Two local outfits handle most rentals. Duck Creek Adventures rents Polaris RZR and Ranger side-by-sides in two- and four-passenger setups. Duck Creek Rentals covers side-by-side and off-road options in the same area. Falcon’s Nest is worth a call for current stock, and they handle snowmobile rentals in winter.

The rentals and tips page has the full breakdown on what each shop offers and what to bring.

Rules on the trail

Dixie National Forest prohibits cross-country motorized travel. All machines on public land need a Utah OHV registration or valid sticker. Spark arrestors and a 96 dB noise cap apply on every route. OHV-only routes limit vehicle width to 62 inches; wider designated routes allow 72. Riders under 18 must wear helmets.

The Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) controls which routes stay open. See our rules and safety page for the full list and emergency contacts.

When to ride

Most Markagunt trails open by late May or early June, depending on snowmelt. Summer brings warm days and cool high-elevation air at 8,400 feet. Early fall adds color without the crowds. By late October, snow begins closing OHV routes, and the system shifts to snowmobile season.

Spring riders should check conditions before heading up. Some loops open earlier than others, and mud can shut sections down even when the road to Duck Creek looks clear.

After the ride

A morning on the trails pairs well with a quieter afternoon at Aspen Mirror Lake or Navajo Lake. You get a reset without another long drive. Duck Creek also works as a base for riders who want Bryce Canyon or Cedar Breaks on other days. Stay high, sleep cool, keep the trailer parked, and hit the parks by car.

Stay where the trails start

Duck Creek Village Inn sits in the middle of the village, close to trailhead access and the rental shops. For a simple base with early mornings and post-ride showers, see our rooms. For more space, a kitchen, and room to spread out after a long trail day, check our cabins.
