Trip Planning story from Duck Creek Village Inn

Duck Creek Village sits in Kane County, Utah, and Kanab is the county seat, 50.7 miles and about 70 minutes south. The Garfield County line runs 1.75 miles north of the village and the Iron County line 1.95 miles northwest, so several of the stops near the inn belong to other counties.

What County Is Duck Creek Village In? Kane, With Two More County Lines Within Two Miles

Duck Creek Village is in Kane County, Utah. Kanab is the county seat, 50.7 miles and about 70 minutes south on Highway 14 and US-89, and the whole drive stays inside Kane County. The village sits close to a county corner, though. The Garfield County line runs 1.75 miles north of the inn, and the point where Kane, Garfield and Iron counties meet lies 1.95 miles to the northwest.

That corner explains a lot. Cedar Breaks, Brian Head and the Zion Overlook belong to Iron County. Panguitch Lake and Mammoth Cave belong to Garfield. A Duck Creek trip can cross two county lines before lunch.

Kane County, the village and the seat 70 minutes away

Kane County dates to January 16, 1864, and covers 3,994 square miles of land, from the Arizona line up to the Markagunt Plateau. Its 7,667 residents give it fewer than two people per square mile, and Kanab alone holds 4,683 of them.

Duck Creek Village has no town government of its own. It is an unincorporated community, so Kane County runs the local government from the courthouse at 76 North Main in Kanab. Our post on how many people live in Duck Creek Village covers the service district that handles fire, EMS and snow removal on the mountain, plus the 393 residents in ZIP code 84762.

The Census Bureau geocoder and the Utah Geospatial Resource Center boundary file agree on the inn’s coordinates: Kane County, FIPS 49025. Kane County’s tourism office treats the village as part of its patch too, and lists Duck Creek beside Kanab and Orderville on its Visit Southern Utah site.

The drive to the county seat runs east on Highway 14 to Long Valley Junction, then south on US-89 through Glendale and Orderville. Our Kanab guide covers the town at the bottom of that road.

The three county lines around the village

Look at a county map and Duck Creek Village sits near the top edge of Kane County. A straight east to west line about 1.75 miles north of the inn separates Kane from Garfield County. Follow that line west and it meets Iron County at a single corner, 1.95 miles from the front door. From that corner, the Iron and Garfield line runs north, a little west of Panguitch Lake, and the Kane and Iron line heads west and then south toward Washington County.

On the road, you meet those lines at these points:

Road from the innCounty line
Highway 14 west to Cedar CityIron County at road mile 7.1
US-89 north to PanguitchGarfield County at road mile 15.4
Highway 14 and US-89 to KanabNone, all 50.7 miles in Kane
Navajo Lake CampgroundNone, 7.4 miles, all in Kane

The Navajo Lake turnoff comes before the Iron County line, and the lake, its three campgrounds and Cascade Falls all sit in Kane County. A few miles farther west, Highway 14 crosses into Iron County and climbs past the Zion Overlook toward the Cedar Breaks junction.

Your day trips sit in three different counties

The stops guests ask us about most split across the map like this. Each place below went through the same boundary file as the inn, using its OpenStreetMap coordinates.

Mammoth Cave surprises people the most. The lava tube feels like part of the village, a short drive up the Mammoth Creek side of the plateau, yet its main entrance sits about 1.7 miles north of the Kane line in Garfield County. Cedar Breaks belongs to Iron County, the same county as Cedar City, and the north shore of Navajo Lake sits about a mile south of the Iron County line.

The county line changes more than the sign

Most of the time a county line on Cedar Mountain means nothing to a visitor. The forest looks the same on both sides, and the Dixie National Forest spans all three counties. Three things change at the line, though.

Search and rescue goes first. Utah Code 17-72-301 gives each county sheriff the job of managing and directing search and rescue in that county, along with the emergency medical responders tied to it. A lost hiker at Spectra Point gets Iron County’s sheriff. A twisted ankle in Mammoth Cave gets Garfield’s.

Visitor information comes second. Each county runs its own tourism office, and each one writes about its own side of the line.

KaneVisit Southern Utah, seat Kanab
IronCedar City and Brian Head Tourism Bureau, seat Parowan
GarfieldBryce Canyon Country, seat Panguitch

The county seat question trips people up. Cedar City is the big town in Iron County, home of the airport and the university, yet the county courthouse sits in Parowan. Garfield County, at 5,180 square miles the largest of the three, runs its business from Panguitch with 5,083 people in the whole county.

Medical care comes third, at least on paper. The village’s own resource page points people to Kane County Hospital in Kanab because the village sits in Kane County, while Cedar City in Iron County comes out about even by the clock. Our post on the nearest hospital to Duck Creek Village walks through that choice.

For a weekend on the mountain, the county matters as a map lesson and little more. Plan your days, then pick a base. Our rooms and cabins sit in Kane County, two miles from Garfield and Iron, with every stop in the table above inside an hour of the door.
