Three mountain stations agree on June afternoons

Duck Creek Village has no working weather station, so the numbers here come from three neighbors. The Assay fire weather station sits at 8,100 feet, six miles east. Panguitch Lake reports from 8,300 feet, and the Harris Flat snow site from 7,800 feet in a meadow five miles southeast. Their June afternoons land within four degrees of each other: 77.0, 73.4 and 75.2F.

Nights split by terrain, the same pattern our October weather post found. Assay averages 47F and Panguitch Lake 46F. Harris Flat averages 37.5F and freezes on about six June nights in a typical year, because cold air drains off the slopes after dark and pools in flat ground. Its last spring freeze fell in June or later in 14 of the last 16 years, with a median date of June 23, and in 2024 it froze as late as July 29.

The extremes run wide. Assay hit 95F on June 28, 2013, and Harris Flat touched 91F the same afternoon. On June 9, 2020, Harris Flat dropped to 20.3F and Assay to 26F. Expect neither extreme on your trip, and pack for both ends of a 35 degree day.

June is the driest month of the year here

Averaged over 2015 to 2025, June brought less precipitation than any other month at all three stations. Harris Flat and Panguitch Lake both averaged 0.59 inches. Midway Valley, near the Highway 14 summit, averaged 0.42 inches, against 4.3 to 5.6 inches a month from January to March.

The jump after June is the monsoon. The National Weather Service offices in the Southwest set the monsoon season at June 15 through September 30, though on this plateau the storms build later in the season. At Harris Flat, the month after June averages more than three times the June total, and August brings even more. A June visitor gets the dry side of that switch.

A dry month on a forested plateau puts fire restrictions in play, and the Forest Service sets them year by year. Check our fire status page before you plan a campfire, and read the summer storm guide for the ATV trails if your trip runs past the end of the month.

Snow on the summit and roads open in June

Snow leaves the village long before June. At Harris Flat it was gone from the ground by mid April in most years, and May 6, 2019 was the latest. The high country holds on longer.

That means a June drive to Cedar Breaks can still pass snowbanks near the summit in a big snow year, while the road itself carries traffic. The Cedar Breaks visitor center reopens in late May after its winter closure.

Daylight is the other June gift. On June 21, 2027 the sun rises at 6:08am and sets at 8:56pm at the inn, and civil twilight lasts until 9:26pm. The solstice itself falls at 8:11am Mountain time that morning.

The valley towns below run 10 to 30 degrees hotter

June is the month the heat below pushes people up the mountain, and the normals show why.

June normal, 1991 to 2020High and low

Kanab, 4,900 ft89.7F and 52.5F

Las Vegas99.4F and 75.8F

The Phoenix June normal low of 78.6F sits above the average June afternoon at every mountain station. The Las Vegas normal low of 75.8F lands right inside the 73 to 77F range of a Duck Creek afternoon. Driving up from either city in June, you trade their nights for our days.

One valley runs the other way at night. Panguitch, at 6,615 feet on the Bryce road, averages a June low of 38.8F, seven degrees colder than Panguitch Lake 1,700 feet higher. Cold air pooling works in summer too. For the full climb and what the altitude changes, see how high Duck Creek Village sits.

If June is your month, our cabins and rooms sit at 8,464 feet on Highway 14, 12 miles east of the turn to Cedar Breaks.
