Three stations near the village agree on August afternoons

Duck Creek Village has no working weather station, so the numbers here come from three neighbors. The Assay fire weather station sits at 8,100 feet, six miles east. Panguitch Lake reports from 8,300 feet, and the Harris Flat snow site from 7,800 feet in a meadow five miles southeast. Their August afternoons average 78.4, 74.7 and 76.6F.

Nights split by terrain, the same pattern our May weather post found. Assay averages 51.5F and Panguitch Lake 49.4F. Harris Flat averages 43.4F, because cold air drains off the slopes after dark and pools in flat meadow ground. Even in August that meadow has touched freezing: 31.3F on August 7, 2020, and 32.0F on August 26, 2024. Neither of the slope stations has recorded an August freeze.

The month cools as it goes. At Harris Flat, the first ten days of August average 78.2F in the afternoon and the last eleven average 74.9F. The hottest August day in the record landed on the same date at every station. On August 18, 2020, Assay hit 93F, Harris Flat 89.6F, Panguitch Lake 87.6F, and Midway Valley near the Highway 14 summit reached 81F.

August is the wet month on the plateau

Most people picture summer in Utah as dry. On this plateau, the wettest month of the year falls in August, not winter.

The rain comes from the monsoon. The National Weather Service offices in the Southwest set the monsoon season at June 15 through September 30, and June sits at the dry end of it here, at 0.6 inches. By August the moisture has arrived. The Weather Service says summer thunderstorms form in the early to mid afternoon.

The year to year swing runs wide. Harris Flat recorded 0.2 inches in August 2020, the same month that produced the heat record. Panguitch Lake took 6.4 inches in August 2023, a month that included the remnants of Tropical Storm Hilary crossing southern Utah on August 20 and 21.

Storm safety on the mountain and in the canyons

The Weather Service rule for lightning is simple: stay inside for 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. The safest places are large buildings and enclosed vehicles with a metal roof, so a car beats a picnic shelter, a tent or a tree. On an open ATV or a bare ridge, head for an enclosed vehicle or a building as soon as you hear thunder.

The same storms matter below the mountain. Zion closed The Narrows and its other slot canyons on July 29, 2026, over flash flood potential, and the park treats July through September as the risky window. The Weather Service adds that 1 to 2 feet of moving water floats most vehicles, SUVs included, so never drive into a flooded dip on a dirt road. Our Narrows and Angels Landing guide covers the backup plans, and the ATV monsoon post covers mud on the trails.

The valley towns below run 10 to 30 degrees warmer

August normal, 1991 to 2020High and low
Cedar City, 5,590 ft88.5F and 55.6F
Kanab, 4,900 ft91.5F and 59.5F
St. George, 2,857 ft99.9F and 70.3F
Las Vegas102.8F and 80.6F
Phoenix105.1F and 83.6F

The Las Vegas August normal low of 80.6F sits above the average August afternoon at all three mountain stations. Phoenix, at 83.6F, sits higher still. A drive up from either city trades nights warmer than our days for a sweater after dark.

One valley runs the other way. Panguitch, at 6,615 feet on the Bryce road, averages an August low of 44.4F, five degrees colder than Panguitch Lake 1,700 feet higher. For live readings, check our weather page, and before a trip to the high country, the road conditions page. SR-148 to Cedar Breaks stays open all summer, since the National Park Service closes it for snow from mid November to mid May on average.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks in the middle of August, and the nights after a storm passes can be the clearest of the week. See watching the Perseids from Duck Creek for where to look. If August is your month, our cabins and rooms sit at 8,464 feet on Highway 14, 12 miles east of the turn to Cedar Breaks.
