Bringing an ATV or side-by-side from another state? Check the Utah permit, rider education and vehicle access for each leg of your Markagunt route.
Before bringing an ATV or side-by-side to Duck Creek Village, sort out three things: the machine’s Utah permit, each driver’s education certificate, and a route open to that vehicle. A home-state plate does not settle all three.
Buy the permit for each machine
Utah’s nonresident OHV permit costs $35 per machine and lasts 12 months from purchase. Buy it online before riding on Utah public land, roads or trails. Utah emails a receipt and temporary permit; allow up to 20 business days for the permanent permit.
Since September 8, 2026, this requirement also applies to out-of-state OHVs registered as street legal, subject to limited exceptions. Check the current street-legal requirements and exceptions if an older guide tells you your home-state plate is enough.
Each driver needs the appropriate certificate
Utah’s adult OHV course is free and online. Drivers under 18 take the separate youth course, with fees that depend on the provider. An existing approved Utah youth certificate remains valid for life; its holder does not need to take the adult course.
Education also applies to self-guided rental customers. Renting a Utah-registered machine means you do not buy an out-of-state permit for that machine, but you still need the appropriate rider certificate. A driver’s license alone does not replace it.

Check every leg of the route
Open the current Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map through our Markagunt map page. Match the roads and trails to your vehicle type, width and travel dates, and check current closures. There is no single width limit that makes every route suitable for your machine.
